50,000-Layer Poultry Farm Solution in Uganda

This project reference describes a commercial poultry farm in Uganda using a five-tier H-type layer cage system and automated poultry farm equipment. The proposed house measures 93 × 12 × 4.5 meters and is configured with 280 cage sets, providing a calculated capacity of 50,400 laying hens.

The layout is intended to support efficient use of building space, organized daily management and the integration of automated feeding, drinking, egg collection, manure removal and environmental control systems. Final equipment quantities and environmental settings should be verified against the project location, local climate, building structure, power supply and farm operating requirements.

Recommended Farm Layout for 50,000 Laying Hens

The four cage rows are arranged along the 93-meter length of the poultry house. Service aisles between the rows provide access for flock inspection, equipment maintenance, cleaning and routine farm management.

Each cage set accommodates 180 laying hens. With 70 sets in each row, one row provides a calculated capacity of approximately 12,600 birds. Across four identical rows, the total design capacity is 50,400 birds.

The five-tier arrangement makes use of vertical building space and allows automated systems to be organized along the cage rows. This configuration can reduce the floor area required per bird compared with lower-density layouts, while creating defined routes for feed delivery, egg collection and manure removal.

Integrated Automated Equipment

The proposed Uganda poultry farm equipment package integrates the main systems required for daily layer-farm operation:

  • Automatic feeding system
    Feed lines, feed pans, feed distribution and feed transfer equipment.
  • Nipple drinking system
    Nipple drinkers with pressure regulators for controlled water delivery.
  • Automatic egg collection
    Egg belts and a central conveyor for transferring eggs to the collection area.
  • Belt manure removal
    Frequent manure discharge to reduce accumulation beneath the cages.

    Control cabinet, exhaust fans, cooling pads, air inlets and ventilation management.

Ventilation and Cooling Design for Uganda

The proposed house uses a negative-pressure ventilation concept. Twenty exhaust fans, each measuring approximately 1.4 × 1.4 meters, are positioned on the end wall. At the opposite end, eight cooling-pad sections, each approximately 3 × 2 meters, provide a planned cooling-pad area of about 48 square meters.

During hot conditions, the exhaust fans draw air through the wet cooling pads. The cooled air moves through the length of the poultry house before being discharged by the fans. Approximately 82 side-wall windows, with 41 openings on each side, can support transitional or natural ventilation when full cooling operation is not required.

Final fan staging, cooling-pad area, air-inlet configuration and control settings should be checked according to the farm’s local temperature, humidity, altitude, building construction and bird-management conditions in Uganda.

Utilities and Supporting Infrastructure

A 50,000-layer farm requires reliable supporting infrastructure in addition to the cage and automation systems. The project should plan for:

  • Stable electrical power and a suitable backup generator.
  • Clean and sufficient drinking-water supply.
  • Feed storage, feed silos and protected feed-transfer routes.
  • Manure handling and temporary or permanent manure-processing space.
  • Egg collection or egg-room space.
  • Equipment control room and maintenance access.
  • Disinfection points, vehicle access and dead-bird disposal arrangements.
  • Effective drainage around the poultry house, particularly for rainy-season conditions.

A backup power source is strongly recommended because ventilation, feeding, drinking and egg collection all depend on electrical operation. The site plan can also reserve space for future poultry houses, additional feed silos, egg conveyors and manure-treatment facilities.
